ISAF soldiers wounded in suicide attack

KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): A suicide attacker detonated his explosives-laden car near a convoy of the International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) at Khanabad dry-port in northern Kunduz province on Saturday.

MEHMUD RAQI (PAN): A military vehicle of French soldiers under NATO command was blown up by an anti-tank mine in the central province of Kapisa this morning, police said.
Deputy police chief Col Attaullah Wahab told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident happened when the convoy was passing Shokhi area at about 8am.
However, he added he has no information about casualties.
But a police official on condition of anonymity said the foreign troops air-lifted the dead and wounded colleagues in helicopters from the scene.
He added the troops were collecting flashes of the dead counterparts in plastic bags.
A resident Gul Wali said he saw four dead and five injured soldiers. A soldier lying 50 meters away from the destroyed tank was burning, added the witness. Foreign troops have not yet commented on the blast.

ISAF troops in Afghanistan
The Albanian Defence Ministry confirmed on Wednesday that an Albanian commando, serving with the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan, has contracted the swine flu virus.
The soldier is undergoing treatment at a Spanish hospital on a base in the city of Herat.
Albania quintupled its military deployment in Afghanistan ahead of the August 20 Afghan presidential poll.
Currently, 150 Albanian commandos are serving under Italian command in Herat, as part of NATO's International Security Assistance Force, ISAF.
Albania also provided troops to the US-led mission in Iraq from the 2003 invasion until last December.
In Iraq, Albania maintained a non-combat contingent of 200 personnel, stationed at Mosul Airport.
With Croatia, Albania joined NATO at the Strasbourg summit in April.
In July 2008, Albania sent 120 commandos to Chad in central Africa to serve with the EU peace-keeping mission there - now transferred to UN authority.

Un Cabo 1º de la Armada española ha resultado herido leve esta tarde en Afganistán como consecuencia de una acción de hostigamiento contra las fuerzas de seguridad afganas, que se encontraban bajo la protección de una sección de las tropas españolas del Equipo de Reconstrucción Provincial (PRT) con base en Qala i Naw, capital de la provincia de Badghis.
El ataque se produjo en las proximidades de Sangha Tesh, al norte de Qala i Naw (Afganistán), resultando herido de bala en el gemelo de una pierna el Cabo 1º de Infantería de Marina F.T.A., según ha informado el Mando de Operaciones del Estado Mayor de la Defensa.
La herida fue valorada por el Equipo de Estabilización “in situ” como leve (Categoría C). Posteriormente se procedió a su evacuación a la base de Qala i Naw, desde donde será trasladado en helicóptero al hospital ROLE 2 de Herat. Tras ser reconocido por el médico, el herido informó de lo sucedido a su familia, directamente, por vía telefónica.
Por otra parte, el Sargento del Ejército de Tierra que resultó herido el pasado miércoles evoluciona favorablemente, por lo que no será necesaria su repatriación. Se prevé que pueda reincorporarse al trabajo dentro de su Unidad en los próximos días.

The US soldier with 97% burns is already treated in the USA, says Dr. Georgi Kesov
Two Bulgarian doctors - Dr. Georgi Kesov and Dr. Ivan Shopov, managed to save the life of a severe burnt US ranger in Afghanistan. The US soldier had 97 percent of his body burnt, but his life was saved after a unique operation performed by the two Bulgarian doctors at the Spanish military hospital in Herat.
"In medicine, such a miracle can happen 1 in a million," their colleagues admitted.
Dr. Kesov is 35-year-old. He was born on May 30, 1974, in the town Sliven, Bulgaria. He went on to graduate the Medical Academy in Sofia and spent three years as a doctor in the Special Forces Parachuting Brigade in Plovdiv. On May 22 this year, Dr. Kesov decided to fly to Herat, Afghanistan, on a mission in a Spanish hospital.
- Dr. Kesov, everybody in Bulgaria is impressed by the fact that Bulgarian surgeons have saved the life of a man with 97% burns. It sounds incredible.
- In general there is nothing impossible in life. The chances of a patient with similar burns to survive are very small, but they still exist. We just did our job. In Afghanistan professionalism is a must.
- When and how did it happen that you had to operate the US soldier?
- It was about three weeks ago. Just before the elections in Afghanistan. The tension really escalated. The US soldier had been in a car that was blown up. In such accidents besides the doctor's professionalism it is absolutely necessary that the life-saving team acts adequately and quickly. The rescue team acted perfectly and carried the patient very rapidly to the hospital.
- How was he transported?
- He was transported in an ambulance. Immediately after the operation he left for Kabul onboard a helicopter, and from there he departed for the Ramstein US base in Germany. I know, that the patient is now hospitalized in a specialized clinic in the USA.
- He is alive! After suffering fourth degree burns?
- Yes, yes he is alive, but I would like to stress that this US clinic is unique, it is specialized in the treatment of burns.
- Who performed the operation?
- My colleague Dr. Ivan Shopov, who heads our surgical team, and I operated on the patient; we practically removed all his skin which was literally grilled. It's important to emphasize that we worked in an excellent cooperation with our Spanish and American colleagues working in the same hospital.
