Chechnya: Tombstone of Russian Power
Chechnya: Tombstone of Russian Power, by Anatol Lieven, Heidi Bradner (Photographer); Yale Univ Pr; ISBN: 0300078811; (May 1999)
"A correspondent for the Financial Times, Anatol Lieven spent much time in Chechnya, the postage-stamp-sized Caucasus republic whose break from Russia in 1994 precipitated a major war (one that Russia lost). Lieven looks into the long, troubled history of Russian-Chechen relations, noting that each side despised the other for largely cultural reasons (the Chechens have long been involved in organized crime in major Russian cities, whereas Russians have long tried to strip Chechnya of its resources). He notes that Chechen society has historically been militarized (one Armenian said to Lieven, "The men are always fighting and the women are cooking for them, nursing their wounds, and bringing up their children"), making the mountain people a formidable foe. In the meanwhile, writes Lieven, the Russian military suffered from low morale and from corruption of various kinds: Russian field soldiers sold their guns to Chechen guerrillas for vodka and currency, while Russian officers stole their soldiers' pay and Russian politicians skimmed off the top. This is an extraordinary look at a little-known conflict."

Fuente: JanesIn a move that has underscored its continuing reliance on the Russian Federation for its defence and security, Armenia received large quantities of Russian military equipment during 2006. This reliance is clearly welcomed by Moscow, which has already reinforced its military base in Armenia with hardware and other equipment belonging to Russian troops withdrawn from neighbouring Georgia

Upping the ante in Georgia's NATO game
Allegations from Tbilisi that Russian helicopters attacked Georgian villages in northeast Abkhazia on 11 March have reheated the Russo-Georgian cold war of September-October 2006, when the arrest of alleged Russian spies in Tbilisi led to the imposition of economic and travel sanctions by Moscow.Behind it all is the struggle for influence in the South Caucasus between Russia and the expanding NATO, with the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia increasingly the focus

15/04/2007 11:41 SEVERODVINSK (northern Russia), April 15 (RIA Novosti) - The tests of Russia's newest missile system, Bulava, will be continued in summer, a top defense official said Sunday.
The national defense program envisions the deployment of the Bulava on nuclear submarines beginning in 2007. The missiles are expected to become the mainstay of the Russian Navy's strategic nuclear forces in decades to come. However, the missile tests failed late last year, despite previous successful launches.
"I believe the new missile tests will be held not earlier than July," Deputy Defense Minister Aleksei Moskovsky said.
The R-30 Bulava (SS-NX-30) ballistic missile was developed at the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology. It can carry up to 10 nuclear warheads and has a range of 8,000 kilometers (about 5,000 miles).
"We do not dramatize the situation. We need to remove purely technological faults in the missile's first stage," the deputy defense minister said.

Producción de subs rusos:
Russian nuclear submarine production is now centered at Sevmash. As of mid-1998 three nuclear-powered submarines were under construction: the first fourth-generation strategic Borei-class ballistic submarine; a Severodvinsk-class "multi purpose" prototype submarine, and one Akula-class attack submarine. The Yuri Dolgoruki, the first of the Borei-class strategic ballistic missile submarines, is intended to replace the obsolete submarines being dismantled with Nunn-Lugar funds. It will have about half the displacement of the giant Typhoon, while carrying 20 SLBMs. The fourth-generation Project 885 Severodvinsk, which was laid down on 21 December 1993, is the follow-on to the Akula class of multipurpose nuclear attack submarine.
