Desmantelada una célula terrorista (comunicado)

Rabat - Los servicios de la Brigada nacional de la policía judicial (BNPJ) desmantelaron una célula terrorista bautizada "Escuadrón Al Battar" e integrada por tres individuos, anuncia el viernes un comunicado del ministerio del Interior.

"A la luz de las investigaciones minuciosas realizadas por los servicios de la Dirección general de la Supervisión del Territorio (DGST), los servicios de la brigada nacional de la policía judicial consiguieron desmantelar una célula terrorista bautizada "Escuadrón Al Battar" integrada por tres individuos, entre ellos un ex detenido en el marco de la ley antiterrorista y dirigida por uno de los individuos más activos sobre las páginas web yihadistas que tienen lazos con la red Al Qaida, y que pudo establecer relaciones estrechas con líderes de organizaciones terroristas en Yemen, Afganistán, Somalia, Libia, Iraq y en otras regiones", precisa el documento.

Los miembros de esta célula terrorista planificaban incorporarse a los campos de la Organización Al Qaida en el Magreb islámico (AQMI) fuera de Marruecos para beneficiarse de entrenamientos militares en la perspectiva de volver al Reino para perpetrar actos criminales contra las sedes de los servicios de seguridad y de intereses occidentales.

Para realizar sus objetivos terroristas, planificaron el asesinato de miembros de la seguridad con el fin de despojarles de sus armas con vistas a utilizarlas en sus planes de sabotaje, agrega el comunicado.

La misma fuente recordó también que los miembros de esta célula estaban en contacto permanente con dirigentes de AQMI con el fin de proporcionarles las armas necesarias para aplicar su proyecto criminal en el Reino y también para coordinar sus operaciones conforme a los objetivos de esta organización terrorista en Marruecos.

Morocco dismantles international extremist cell

Moroccan judicial police (BNPJ) dismantled a cell linked to international extremist organisation "Islamic Liberation Party", the interior ministry said on Saturday (February 4th). One of the men arrested in the case is a Danish citizen of Moroccan origin who was allegedly sent to Morocco to recruit extremists.

Morocco smashes terror network

RABAT — Morocco said Saturday it had broken up a "terrorist network" active in several cities in the country and that had links to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

The network is "led by a leading figure of Mujahideen of Morocco", a little known group with ties to international terror groups, the ministry said.

The group's head was the subject of several national and international arrest warrants for his involvement in affairs linked to terrorism and serious threats to the kingdom, it added.

The movement is "well organised, very dangerous and linked to contacts in other countries in the region," a security source told AFP referring to the countries in northern Africa's Sahel, AQIM's desert stomping ground.

"The head of the network holds close ties with international terrorist groups and succeeded in smuggling weapons into Morocco... with the aim of carrying out attacks," the source said.

The interior ministry did not say how many members of the network were being held or their nationality.

Morocco on Saturday (May 5th) announced the country's third victory against terrorist cells since Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane took office in November.

Judicial Police (BNJP) arrested an undisclosed number of terror suspects in the sting operation, including the alleged leader of the "Mujahideen Movement in Morocco", which reportedly operated in several cities in the kingdom.

"The group's head was the subject of several national and international arrest warrants for his involvement in terrorism-related cases and serious interference with the internal security of the kingdom," an interior ministry statement read.

According to the ministry, the ringleader had close ties with international terrorist groups and had been able to transport weapons into Morocco.

Further details of the raid were not released. The ongoing investigation is being supervised by the prosecution.

Other recent victories against terror in Morocco include the April raid near Meknes of a terrorist cell allegedly planning to attack the kingdom's electrical supply and the February dismantling of a cell linked to the Islamic Liberation Party.

AT: Morocco said on Monday it has arrested eight people suspected of plotting attacks against strategic sites, less than a week after the kingdom announced it had dismantled a "terrorist" cell.

The latest arrests targeted a group called Ansar al-Sharia in the Islamic Maghreb, dismantling the cell whose eight members planned to "commit acts of sabotage against strategic sites," said an interior ministry statement.

The cell's targets included "sensitive buildings, security headquarters and tourist sites in several Moroccan cities," it added.

The suspects "were developing contacts with terrorist groups linked to Al-Qaeda," whose North African franchise is active in the Sahel region and in northern Mali, the statement said.

A security official reached by AFP said one of the cell members "was preparing a trip to the Sahel to get financial support from Islamist groups in that region."

They added the arrests were made in Rabat and several other cities. One of the suspects had previously been detained under the kingdom's anti-terror laws.

The tourist sites that were to be targeted were in Ouarzazate and Errachidia.

The interior ministry had announced the dismantling of a "terrorist cell" several days before, comprising nine members plotting to set up a training camp in the mountainous Rif region in the north, in order to attack "the authorities".
