Noticia rara: 4 estadounidenses y un británico, supuestamente de la empresa GreySide, detenidos en Mozambique con armamento, munición y comunicaciones. Dicen que iban a liberar un barco secuestrado.

Muy parecido a lo de los británicos detenidos en Eritrea, que llevaba "para protección marítima" pistolas y subfusiles con silenciador.

La embajada USA ya ha dicho que ellos no saben nada, y si el cliente (sea el que sea) niega saber de que iba el tema, que se preparen para divertirse.

Realmente raro. Viajan a Etiopia cargan las armas en Kenia los pillan en Mozambique y los posibles barcos que hay para " liberar " estan en Tanzania.

Otro ataque de hoy a un carguero en Kenia por dos esquifes ,pero parece que se ha librado y va rumbo a Mombasa.

Pacific Express Approached and Fired on by PAG off Kenya
On 20-SEP-2011 at 10:34 LT ( 07:34 UTC ), the PACIFIC EXPRESS was attacked by a PAG while underway in position 04 47 0 S, 044 35 0 E, 300nm SE of Mombasa, Kenya on bearing 099. A PAG of one skiff with six pirates on board fired at the PACIFIC EXPRESS. The Master raised the alarm and undertook evasive maneuvers to prevent PAG from coming alongside. A second PAG skiff also with six pirates on board joined the attack and pursuit. Ladders, RPG's and guns were spotted on both PAG skiffs. Vessels evasive maneuvers and anti-piracy measures initiated disrupted several attempts made by the two skiff to come alongside and board vessel. The Pacific Express continued on to their destination port of Mombasa

Maritime Security: Spain Allows Heavy Weapons On Tuna Fishing Vessels

You know, out of all of the countries that I have followed, Spain has been one of those countries willing to work with private security and shipping companies the most to achieve a good level of security. Unless someone can point out a better arrangement?

Especially when Spain is paying grants to Tuna boats that cover 25% of the cost to hire security, or providing military training to that security, and most of all, allowing those PSC’s to use heavy weapons. That last one is a big plus for me, just because it reflects the reality of what is out there.

I also like the idea of placing conditions on these grants. Although why not just grant the Letter of Marque? But this is an interesting way of mitigating the principal-agent problem. Here is the quote:

“No aid shall be granted in cases of breach of Community law, Common Fisheries Policy or legislation to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activity. In these cases the aid will be refunded depending on the severity of the infringement,” the Ministry added.

Armed guards on boats are having some fantastic success against piracy. We have a 100 percent success rate. But that is no reason to get comfortable or to not evolve and stay one step ahead. Today’s pirates are consolidating, they are innovating, they are attacking using wolfpack tactics, they are using NVG’s to attack at night, and they are using weapons of war. With that kind of enemy, we must give today’s armed guards every advantage we can. So with that said, I give Spain high marks for this new weapons policy. -Matt

Heavy weapons allowed in tuna fishing vessels in the Indian Ocean

In order to combat pirates’ action in the Indian Ocean, the Ministry of Defense of Spain authorized the use of large caliber weapons — 12.70 mm — in tuna vessels fishing in these waters.
So far, the boats have been able to carry weapons of 7.62 millimetres, but the current ones are much more powerful and they are usually anchored using some kind of support.
The measure was announced by Defence Minister, Carme Chacón, after meeting with representatives of tuna vessels and of shipowners of the Spanish fleet in the Indian Ocean.

Barco y capitán liberado
El capitán noruego de la "Ranafjord", quien fue detenido por la tarde Sep 29 después de que había consumido grandes cantidades de alcohol y luego se fue a dormir en su guardia, salió de la detención la misma noche por la policía de Jutlandia del Norte. El capitán noruego puede decidir si se celebra el juicio para la navegación borracho en Dinamarca o Noruega. Lo hará probablemente eligió ser enjuiciada en Dinamarca. Según el comando operacional de la armada "Ranafjord" fue sólo 10 minutos de antes de encallar a alta velocidad cuando la nave se detuvo. La Armada patrulla barco "Nymfen" había logrado ponerse en contacto con la tripulación. El barco había 40-50 metros cúbicos de combustible bunker a bordo, que podría haber desencadenado una fuerte contaminación en una toma de tierra. En la tarde del 30 de septiembre el "Ranafjord" le permitió navegar de nuevo, ahora con un capitán más sobrio a bordo.

Loopster que malo eres... llevaban las armas con silenciador para poder subsistir en alta mar; con ellas cazaban a los peces por la noche sin que se dieran cuenta

Further details have emerged about the pirate attack on the “Ocean Rig Poseidon” drillship off Tanzania.

Pirates attacked the 228-metre long vessel from a small boat at approximately 08:00 as she was sailing.

The pirate started firing with AK47s and assault rifles after climbing aboard. Guards onboard the ship answered the assault by returning fire, overpowering the attackers and taking them prisoner.

Ataque a primera hora de la mañana, buque perforador, equipo de seguridad pillado con la guardia baja (los piratas no hicieron fuego hasta subir a bordo, ¿subieron en silencio?), contra-asalto y piratas capturados.
