Suicide Bomber Kills
Prominent Afghan Police Chief
VOA News
April 15, 2011
Officials say a suicide bomber has killed the police chief of Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province, in what is seen as a major blow to security in the region.
A provincial spokesman says the bomber was dressed as a police officer. He detonated his explosives near Khan Mohammad Mujahid's office in Kandahar city, killing the chief and two other police officers. Three others were wounded.
Mujahid was a former mujahideen fighter against the Soviet Union in the 1980s, and had survived at least two earlier attempts on his life.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, both condemned. Kandahar is the heartland of the Taliban insurgency.
President Karzai said the “enemies of Afghanistan” will not achieve their goals with such terrorist attacks. General Petraeus said the attack was the “act of cowardly insurgents” desperate to prevent the empowerment of Afghan security forces and the Afghan people.
Insurgents have targeted many police and government officials in recent months. A Taliban suicide bomber killed the provincial police chief of northern Kunduz province in March.
On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned of a violent “spring fighting season” in Afghanistan.

The ceremony was presided by Brig. Gen. Carmine Massiello (Italian Army), Regional Command-West Commander. Several authorities attended the event such as the Badghis province governor, the provincial police chief and the Commander of the 3rd Brig., 207th Corps, Afghan National Army.
In his speech, Col. Rosaleny emphasized the satisfaction and pride felt for having commanded a contingent that has demonstrated the results of a prior preparation and therefore accomplishing the mission with great success.
During these months, the ASPFOR XXVII contingent has strengthened the ISAF presence in Badghis province by establishing a new combat outpost in the village of Darrah-i-Bum. Likewise it has brought security for the construction works of a Ring Road section in the region. These improvements have increased the trade and institutional relations in the province, therefore improving the security and development in the area.
In addition to this, the Spanish contingent has culminated important development projects, always maintaining a fluent relationship with the local authorities in order to improve the governance of the province.
