Research & Development

Blackwater Worldwide’s ongoing search for the most effective and efficient technologies is at work every day at BW facilities. Our engineers are a team of experienced experts who focus on finding the best possible solutions for our customers. Realistic, but cost-effective, models are explored and tested to ensure Blackwater Worldwide products and services are the best in the world. Using the most current technologies, Blackwater promotes maximum value. Blackwater practices what it preaches; innovative and alternative energy sources are currently being constructed for use at Blackwater’s own facilities. Windmills that will produce a cost-efficient energy supply will be located at our Moyock, North Carolina location.

Blackwater’s team of experts seeks out the latest concepts in design and technology to continuously improve upon our past proven success. From research to development, from beginning to end, Blackwater Worldwide’s goal is to produce excellent quality at the most economical price for our customers.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

One example of Blackwater Worldwide’s design and manufacturing capability is the remotely piloted airship vehicle. It represents the company’s ability to offer a cost effective persistent surveillance solution to support operations along America’s borders or to support troops operating in tough environments.

Airships

Blackwater Airships LLC was established in January 2006 as the newest Blackwater venture --with a mission to build a remotely piloted airship vehicle (RPAV). Although seemingly different from the traditional Blackwater mission, this new venture to provide a persistent surveillance capability is fully consistent with the Blackwater goal of offering solutions which help to protect our forces wherever they are deployed and support our homeland security.

The Blackwater Airships team completed design work at the end of 2006 and is now building the Polar 400 airship. This highly capable RPAV will provide a platform ready to accomodate a wide variety of state-of-the-art surveillance, communications and detection equipment that can record and store events and downlink them in real-time to ground operators. The make-up of the mission payload of up to 400 lbs will be determined by customer requirements -- whether for combat areas, port or border security, or coastal patrol.

The prototype Polar 400 is completing propulsion ground tests and when fully assembled will undergo test flights and then move into production by mid-year 2007. Following successful demonstration flights, Blackwater Airships will begin selling or leasing airships to Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and other government customers. The Polar 400 is designed to operate for 48 to 60 hours at altitudes from 5,000 to 15,000 feet. The unique design of the RPAV propulsion system will give it the capability to loiter over a desired location with excellent low-speed maneuverability, along with an ability to fly at up to 50 knots to move quickly to and from a target area.
Armored Ground Transport

Blackwater Worldwide manufactures reliable armored personnel carriers (APCs) designed to provide superior protection at a reasonable price. Our armored vehicles can be easily reconfigured to accommodate specific mission requirements. Variants can be used for urban patrolling, convoy protection, troop transportation, command and control, medical evacuation and reconnaissance.

Grizzly APC

The leader in the high-threat security industry, Blackwater incorporates real-world lessons learned on the streets of Iraq and Afghanistan into all of our operations. Now, we’ve gone one step further.

Blackwater presents the GRIZZLY™ – the world’s only Armored Personnel Carrier intended to counter the most lethal threats in the modern urban combat environment.
The GRIZZLY™ incorporates the Blackwater High Threat Armor Protection System TM (patent pending). This state-of-the-art technology is an exceptional armor system unmatched in the urban APC market. The Blackwater High Threat Armor Protection System is engineered to defeat projectiles up to .50 caliber and to provide an IED-survivable envelope.

We are committed to manufacturing excellence. We are dedicated to your safety in the field.
Mission Support Equipment

Blackwater Worldwide creates mission support solutions that are reliable. The goal is to offer operators equipment they can count on, equipment that will enable safe, successful completion of tasks. Blackwater Worldwide’s team of professional engineers and skilled workforce integrates high-tech equipment to better suit the mission and protect the operators in the field. Portable antenna systems that extend ranges of communication and high-tech surveillance equipment, vital to operators in unstable environments, are examples of the mission support equipment that Blackwater Worldwide can supply. With ingenuity, our dynamic team creates the most effective mission support equipment to enable successful, secure completion of all assignments. The integration of this advanced apparatus saves money and supplies the operators with the equipment they deserve. Blackwater Worldwide offers its customers the best equipment at the best price.
Maritime Platforms

Blackwater Worldwide’s pioneering spirit and resourcefulness is seen in the McArthur, a 183 foot ship. The McArthur was reconfigured and modified in 2006 and is now a Blackwater Worldwide Maritime Security Support Craft. The McArthur is a multi-purpose maritime vessel designed to support military and law enforcement training, peacekeeping, and stability operations worldwide. With the latest technology and innovation, Blackwater Worldwide now provides a state-of-the art vessel with numerous capacities. The McArthur offers a full array of products, including state-of-the-art navigation systems and satellite based communication systems. Blackwater Worldwide is proud to offer the most modern technology and the most resourceful maritime solutions.
Operational Test & Evaluation

Blackwater Worldwide's 7,000 acre location in Moyock, North Carolina provides abundant area for operational testing and evaluations. Because of its open and remote location, most testing can be done on site. This ability prevents delays and expedites the final assessment of products, thus reducing the cost to our customers. If required, Blackwater does have access to other world-class testing facilities; however, whenever possible, on location testing and evaluation is completed. BW's assets include a 2500 foot runway, multiple target systems, a 70,000 square foot state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, and miles of driving test tracks. Blackwater Worldwide's ability for immediate testing of its designs and products is invaluable to BW's team of knowledgeable engineers and experienced technology experts, who are dedicated to ensuring the latest hi-tech improvements in our products. Blackwater Worldwide's commitment to consistent quality and excellence for our customers extends to the testing and evaluation of all our products and services

On May 4, at 1545 hours, two Blackwater K-9 handlers and their K-9’s were attached to a senior U.S. diplomatic detail operating in the heart of the Sunni Triangle. They arrived at the residence of an important Iraqi Government official, separated into two teams and began conducting bomb searches at separate locations. Both handlers had been to this location on numerous occasions. During their normal search routine, the dogs were becoming increasingly uneasy. They’d noticed a strange reduction in the normal level of security associated with the venue. Shrugging off their apprehension the handlers continued searching the vehicles outside the structure.

Suddenly, one of the dogs alerted, pawing at the rear wheel well of one particular car.

The dog’s reaction was strong enough to indicate a problem. His handler called to the other Blackwater K-9 specialist and asked him to confirm the alert with his dog. The second K-9 team approached cautiously; after all, this was Baghdad. Most explosives left by insurgents were command detonated. Meaning that someone was probably watching the scene from a safe distance, ready to make a cell phone call that would detonate the bomb.

The second dog circled the suspect vehicle and then stopped suddenly – alerting vigorously near the same rear wheel well. The two Blackwater handlers looked at each other thinking that this was more than enough confirmation that something bad was about to happen.

Relying on their training and their experience there was no mistake, a large explosive device was sitting right in front of the meeting site … and a senior U.S. diplomat was only minutes away.

The Blackwater K-9 handlers were in their late thirties, former law enforcement and military veterans. They had worked for Blackwater and the U.S. Government in Iraq for more than two years. This wasn’t their first bomb detection drill but as pros, they knew time was of the essence.

They moved away from the vehicle and called their supervisor. Immediately, the U.S. command center received word about the bomb and directed that the diplomatic motorcade abort the meeting and return to safety.

Other Blackwater security personnel staged at the venue began evacuating the Iraqi civilians and securing the area.

At the same time, one of the Blackwater personnel observed a suspect video taping their actions from a nearby rooftop. It was now apparent that this was a well-planned ambush dedicated to killing the U.S. diplomat.

The team received word that the diplomat and his motorcade had safely arrived at a secure compound. U.S. Army E.O.D. (explosive ordnance disposal) was deployed and linked up with the Blackwater team on site.

E.O.D. was able to quickly set up and upon their inspection discovering a bomb composed of TNT. The combined U.S. Army/Blackwater team conducted a secondary search of the area and discovered another IED. This device was a 120mm artillery shell that was rigged for detonation and placed near the roadway. Explosive charges of this size would have destroyed the building. The bombs would have killed countless innocent Iraqis and undoubtedly killed both the U.S. diplomat and the senior Iraqi official, had it not been discovered by the Blackwater K-9 team.

http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/ ... 22&sp=true
