HERAT • About 15,000 people protested in Afghanistan yesterday to condemn the reprinting of a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Danish newspapers and a film on the Holy Quran by a Dutch politician.
Protesters burned Danish and Dutch flags and chanted anti-Western slogans. In the western city of Herat, scene of the largest of the protests, demonstrators smashed the windows of a police vehicle, while a grenade was hurled at police close to government buildings before the demonstrators dispersed.
Afghans also gathered in the eastern province of Kunar, on the border with Pakistan. Yesterday’s protests were the largest in the past fortnight in Afghanistan and, like previous demonstrations, marchers demanded the expulsion of Dutch and Danish troops who operate under NATO's command in the country.
There were no casualties from the explosion in Herat and both protests ended peacefully.
The reprinting of the cartoon and the planned release of the film coincide with recent incursions by Israel into Gaza, where more than 120 Palestinian civilians have been killed.
The developments have angered many in the Muslim world and prompted a series of protests in Afghanistan where Taliban are leading an insurgency against the government and foreign troops.
Dutch right-wing politician Geert Wilders is expected to release his film, thought to be critical of the Quran, later this month.
The cartoon-one of 12 that prompted riots in many Muslim countries in 2006 - was republished by a number of Danish papers last month to show solidarity with the cartoonist after three men were arrested on suspicion of plotting to kill him. Muslims consider any depiction of the Prophet (PBUH) as offensive.

Afganistán por ahora sigue siendo un país muy descontrolado para una participación policial desde mi punto de vista. Me imagino que si se envía algo sería en base al GAR principalmente.

Afghanistan: Tools and Skills for Rural Communities
After more than a quarter-century of war and civil strife, rural communities in Afghanistan are returning to their villages and people are eager to rebuild their lives. Among the daunting adversities they face is a widespread lack of tools and skills needed to resume or initiate sustainable livelihoods. In partnership with the Danish Committee for Aid to Afghan Refugees, UNIDO carried out a two-year project to help small rural communities engage in viable farming and non-farming activities.
The immediate targets of the project were 43 war-devastated villages in the Ghazni and Herat regions. Farmers with small plots of land and groups of women were provided with tools and machinery as well as training to improve agricultural production and food-processing capabilities. Home-based technologies allowed the establishment of women’s micro enterprises whose viability was ensured by greater marketing opportunities for their food products. Rural providers of services – such as blacksmiths, masons, carpenters and tailors – were also helped to upgrade their skills and consequently increase their contribution to the reconstruction effort. The overall impact of UNIDO’s assistance is a significant improvement in food security and in the villagers’ capability to generate auxiliary incomes.

Atacado un equipo de once militares españoles en Afganistán sin sufrir daños personales

Madrid. (EUROPA PRESS).- Un equipo del PRT español, perteneciente a la base de Qala e Now, fue atacado esta mañana por un grupo de desconocidos en las cercanías de la localidad de Sang Atesh, localidad que se encuentra a unos 60 kilómetros al norte de Qala e Now, sin sufrir daños personales, sólo materiales, según informa el Ministerio de Defensa.
El equipo, formado por 11 militares, ha conseguido ponerse a salvo en la comisaría de la ciudad, una de las que recientemente ha sido reforzada por España dentro del programa con el que se está consiguiendo aumentar la presencia de la policía afgana en la provincia.
De acuerdo con los datos del informe preliminar del Estado Mayor de la Defensa, el ataque no ha provocado daños personales y sólo daños materiales en uno de los vehículos Vamtac utilizado por los militares españoles.
El equipo recibió apoyo de manera inmediata por una sección motorizada de Qala e Now y por un caza de ISAF que no llegó a utilizar su armamento.

Afghan officials have announced the capture of Maulvi Dastagir following a raid by Afghan intelligence operatives in the western province of Herat, the Pajhwok Afghan News center reported on Sunday. Dastagir, a key Taliban field operative in neighboring Badghis province, was seized in the Kamarkalagh district just north of Herat’s provincial capital. Dastagir spoke regularly with regional media outlets and was the Taliban’s unofficial spokesman for their northwestern faction.
In November, he spoke with the Institute for War and Peace Reporting regarding the Taliban’s plans and objectives for the desolate northwestern area, which is lightly guarded by a small contingent of Spanish NATO forces.
“We are trying to open up this route just as we did in the past,” he told the agency. “Our policy is different up here. We have openly engaged the government and foreign forces in the south, but in the north we are quietly expanding our area. The government is weaker here than in the south and the mountains have provided good terrain for our operations.”
He went on to claim the Taliban controlled most of Badghis province but had refrained from attacking the province’s district capital, Qala-e-Naw.
“We would like to occupy the province right away, since the capital [Qala-e-Naw] and some of the districts are still under government control. We could do it in one single attack, but we are waiting for a larger operation. Our strategy is to go for many provinces at once.”
NATO and Afghan forces launched Operation Eagle Claw II, a joint security operation targeting Dastagir’s men, shortly before his interview. Mullah Qayum, a local Taliban commander originally from neighboring Faryab province, was arrested along with 17 of his men during the operation. Another tactical level Taliban commander, Mullah Babai, was killed along with 20 of his fighters before Operation Eagle Claw II concluded in late 2007.
Recently, despite the foul winter weather that has swept across the northern plains, Taliban insurgents have repeatedly staged attacks against newly created police check points in the troubled Ghormach, Qadis, and Bala Murghab districts of Badghis province.
Afghan security forces thwarted an ambush on March, 9 and killed Mullah Muhammad Hanif, a skilled improvised bomb maker from the Qadis district. Hanif was wanted by local authorities for a long list of bomb attacks that killed and wounded a number of Afghan police throughout 2007.
Only days prior, Taliban insurgents attacked a police check point in the Bala Murghab district leaving a number of police and insurgents dead, including the Taliban cell’s suspected commander.
Northwestern Taliban leaders
Maulvi Abdul Rahman: This Taliban-era governor of Ghor province now heads the Taliban’s operations in northwestern Afghanistan. He coordinated two large-scale assaults on two districts in Badghis province in the summer of 2007 resulting in numerous casualties.
Mullah Babai: A tactical-level Taliban commander in Badghis. He died along with 20 of his men during Operation Eagle Claw II in late 2007.
Mullah Abdul Qayum: Another tactical-level commander in Badghis province, although he originally hails from the Qaisar district of Faryab province. He was the leading Taliban field commander in the northwest during 2007. He was captured along with 17 of his men during Operation Eagle Claw II in late 2007.
Mullah Dastagir: A local Taliban commander in Badghis province and unofficial spokesman for the group’s “northern front,” Dastagir was arrested on March 16, 2008.
Abdur Rahman Haqani: This top-level Taliban field operative launches attacks in northwestern Badghis and Faryab provinces. He is still active as of 2007.
Mullah Muhammad Hanif: A skilled IED bomb maker in the Qadis district, Hanif attacked a police post in March 2008 and was subsequently shot and arrested by authorities. He was wanted for a long string of attacks on police check posts in the area.
Mullah Mutmayen: The self-proclaimed Taliban commander in Badghis province.
Mawlawi Abdul Hamid: This Taliban leader in Herat’s of Shindand district is believed to have orchestrated the 2007 abduction of two Italian soldiers from their patrol in Herat. He conducts a wide array of anti-government acts throughout Herat.

El vehículo en el que viajaban once militares españoles y que el pasado martes fue objeto de un ataque en Afganistán fue alcanzado por una granada que impactó en su rueda delantera izquierda, según el informe definitivo del Estado Mayor de la Defensa sobre ese incidente. Los militares españoles, que no sufrieron ningún daño personal, fueron atacados en las cercanías de la localidad de Sang Atesh y consiguieron ponerse a salvo en la comisaría de la ciudad.
Un portavoz oficial del Ministerio de Defensa ha informado del contenido del informe definitivo del Estado Mayor de la Defensa, en el que se ha determinado que fue una granada RPG la que alcanzó el vehículo Vamtac en el que viajaban.
La granada impactó en la rueda delantera izquierda del vehículo y afectó al motor, pero, gracias al blindaje de este tipo de vehículos, no a la cabina.
El contingente español recuperó el material aprovechable del vehículo y abandonó éste al darlo por inutilizado.
