-- An explosion in a Beirut suburb has killed Lebanon's top anti-terror investigating officer and his driver, sources with the Lebanese Internal Security Forces and a government minister told CNN.

The Lebanese Red Cross said four other people were killed and 20 wounded, the state-run National News Agency said, according to The Associated Press. CNN has yet to confirm a final death toll though.

"It was a powerful blast," CNN's Anthony Mills said. "I was less than half a mile away when it occurred and I felt the shock waves in the car I was traveling in.

"I arrived on the scene several minutes later and there was widespread damage -- several vehicles that had been reduced to hulks of burning, twisted metal ... debris scattered over a wide area."

The explosion killed Capt. Wissam Eid, the sources said.

Hazmiyeh is a Christian neighborhood northeast of the capital.

Attacks of this nature have escalated as Lebanon has been in the midst of a political crisis as pro- and anti-Syrian lawmakers in parliament are locked in a battle to elect a president.

Amal Movement official killed in clashes
January 27, 2008
A member of the opposition Amal movement was killed by gunfire during a demonstration in Beirut on Sunday over power cuts, a party official told AFP.

“Ali Hassan Hamza has passed away after being shot in the back,” the official said on condition of anonymity, adding that he was unable to identify the source of the fire.
Earlier a security official and witnesses told AFP that gunmen opened fire on Lebanese troops in the southern suburbs of Beirut where demonstrators had blocked roads with blazing tires to protest chronic power cuts in that area.

Tension high between UNIFIL, Israel
Wed, 06 Feb 2008 19:48:06

UN forces in southern Lebanon have been on high alert after Israeli troops prevent UNIFIL peacekeepers from repairing a border fence.

The tension was sparked Wednesday afternoon, when a group of Spanish peacekeepers were repairing the barbed wire fence near the village of Ghajar in southern Lebanon, where Israeli troops shot two Lebanese men on Sunday.

An Israeli patrol approached the UN troops and asked them to stop their work and leave the area, the Press TV correspondent reported.

After facing the UN peacekeepers' refusal, the Israeli troops threatened that they would open fire on them if they did not leave the area.

The two sides then took up positions and the commander of the UNIFIL unit ordered his troops to open fire on the Israeli troops if they began shooting.

The UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) also deployed French troops to the region in preparation for a military clash with Israel, the report added.

The UNIFIL Command in Naqura has reportedly contacted Israeli officials and urged them to stop 'provocative acts' against UN peacekeepers.

http://www.dailystar.com.lb/SG_report_Res_1701_6.asp

Destacamos
During the reporting period, there were three different instances of IDF soldiers pointing their weapons in the direction of UNIFIL patrols, with the IDF also pointing infra-red lasers in one of the instances. UNIFIL is continuing its investigation into an incident of 13 February 2008 when small arms fire from the Israeli side hit a minefield warning sign in the vicinity of a United Nations mine clearance team, operating close to the Blue Line. The IDF informed UNIFIL that it was conducting its own investigation to ascertain the origins of the small arms fire and the circumstances of the incident.
Investigations by both Lebanese and Spanish national authorities into the 24 June 2007 attack against UNIFIL, which killed six peacekeepers serving with the Spanish contingent are ongoing. To date, no one has claimed responsibility for this attack and the perpetrators remain unknown.
